These artists were chosen based on the current noise they are making, me feeling their music and/or the movements and buzz in the Canadian industry around them.
DRAKE
This addition to the list is obvious. Drake has had the most success of any Canadian artist and he has not even dropped an official album yet. Not to mention he is the hottest, new artist out on the planet. Drake is repping our city and making us proud. Hate him or love him, Kardi put us on the map and Drake is making us a major musical destination.
JUICE ROCHESTER
Juice Rochester is a homie from back in the day of mine. We met through shared friends but more importantly, those in the know know that he has been working on his project for some time and it has the potential to really make some noise and cross genres.
PAGE
Page is an artist with ever growing presence in the city of Toronto. With a smash hit under his belt featuring Drake (I’m Still Fly) and a previous hit to his name (Balling Is My Hobby), Page and his team are expected to make some noise next year.
VERSE
I’m not going to go any deeper with the reasons why I will be leaving a mark in 2010, than I have with my peers but know that there is a lot on deck. With my current single Hard to Breathe charting number 2 behind Jay-Z in some Canadian cities before it is officially released, things are looking good.
KARDINAL OFFISHAL
Kardinal has had the most successful year of his career and earned international acclaim with his hit single Dangerous featuring Akon. Signed to Konvict and known as Canada’s original reigning Hip Hop king, Kardi’s list of contacts is as impressive as Drake’s. We’ve come along way from the Fresh Arts days playboy. Expect the unexpected from this Reggae, Rap infusion.
SEAZON
Seazon has brought creativity to the Hip Hop landscape with his audible autobiographies. Ranging from Diddy to Bob Marley, Seazon is making his mark by pushing the creative envelope and paying homage to those who have done it before him. Why do we think he is on the right track?; ask Chamillionaire who’s video is a direct bite of Seazon’s.
RICHIE SOSA
Richie Sosa has been held back by border issues but has still managed to have street hits like ‘I Bang’ keep his name hot. Always dropping strong material, in 2010 we hope to hear Mr. Sosa on commercial radio blazing the airwaves the way he has the streets.
K-OS
K-OS is another self-explanatory addition to this list. Known for pushing the boundaries, this Hip Hop, Folk, Contemporary artist continues to sell and inspire. We expect to hear new music in 2010 alongside reports of smashing guitars.
SHAD
Another homie that I am proud of is my boy Shad. Playboy is as down to earth as soil itself. Creative and possessing a delivery that is as complex as it is simple to digest, this artist has blazed through the Canadian music scene leaving a mark and clearing a path for a bright future. We are proud of you playboy.
PETER JACKSON
This dude is one of the hardest working artists on the scene. It is his grind which I think is going to have him making noise next year more than anything else. Playboy books other acts, sets up his own tours and holds down his city. I respect hustle and I respect his.
BELLY
Loud and in your face, Belly has been one of the most consistent Canadian rap artists, if not the most consistent in recent years. Love him or hate him, he has hits and notable collabs on his resume. Belly is a heavyweight in the Canadian industry when it comes to urban music.
FITO BLANKO
Fito has been Mr. Reggaeton before the explosion of Reggae, Latin music and Rap fused. Now applying the finishing touches on his album, Fito Blanko promises to bring that sound that has made him an international presence all these years.
MAYHEM MOREARTY
Mayhem has his hood on lock and as his street buzz intact. Rumour is that playboy is releasing via E1. I’m not sure what he has in store but I believe he is dropping in 2010. If so, put the pressure on them playboy until they say uncle.
LUU BREEZE
Luu Breeze has been bringing that Eastern Canada flow for a minute and is one of the nicest new breed MC’s to do his thing. The city hasn’t heard much but has definitely been feeling playboy’s material. If something drops, it will be received by ears that have been anticipating something from Breeze for a minute.
